As the final quarter of 2020 comes to an end and we enter the new year, we look back at 2020 as one of the craziest years in our lifetimes. We were hit hard by the news of a deadly pandemic that insidiously took over the world and at times brought everything to a complete halt. Lives were lost, families separated and businesses absolutely destroyed by the devastating effects of the Covid-19 virus.

The creative industry was hit particularly hard; the closing of entertainment venues, travel restrictions, and lockdowns put a halt on the careers and livelihoods of millions of creatives worldwide. We then witnessed the unjust and inhumane murder of an unarmed African American man, George Floyd, who died at the hands of Minneapolis Police. This sparked an abrupt response from Black communities and allies everywhere as we saw months of sustained protesting in countries all over the world.

At one point this year it seemed there was no more room for fun and freedom in our society. In spite of everything creativity still shone through and took center stage with innovations from the creative community such as, Hanifa’s Fashion Show, No Signal Radio, Verzus and more providing us with a small amount of respite and hope in what has been such a dark and sombre year.

This year we also launched our very own GUAP Fund and Black GUAP Fund to provide some financial relief for creatives who were impacted most by the economic burden of Covid. Since launching we have funded over 75 creatives. We would like to thank everyone who donated and helped us help our community.

This year we, as an organisation, learned not to take anything for granted, and to always give even when you don’t have much to give. There is always somebody who needs something that you can help with. Whether that be your pennies, your voice, or your platform, there is always a way that you can do your bit to make life a little easier for someone else.

We’d like to dedicate this issue to all those who have lost their lives due to Covid-19 and a special dedication to a family member of GUAP who gracefully departed this year:
